About Us

The mission of the Vista Grande Elementary School community is to provide each student with an exceptional education in a compassionate, diverse, and safe environment.

We believe:

  • That education is a collaborative effort shared by the entire community - students, family, staff and community members.
  • In encouraging individuals to appreciate the value and worth of themselves and others.
  • In providing exceptional support, care, and understanding.
  • In providing the opportunity for every child to achieve to their greatest ability and potential, in order to become lifelong learners.
  • In creating a safe educational atmosphere where individuals can identify and pursue intellectual, artistic, and extracurricular interests.
  • In preparing students to be responsible, productive and thoughtful members of society.
  • Optimal learning depends upon innovative educational opportunities, quality staff and facilities.
  • Professional development is essential to meet the needs of students.

There are a variety of programs available for our students to get the highest quality of education. The Common Core Math Standards concentrate on a clear set of math skills and concepts. Students will learn concepts in a more organized way both during the school year and across grades. The standards encourage students to solve real-world problems. Students are often asked to justify why a math statement is true, in order to build their mathematical understanding. In addition, math procedures are also taught and practiced.

Language Arts

The Common Core Language Arts Standards establish guidelines for English language arts (ELA) as well as for literacy in history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. Students must learn to read, write, speak, listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, the standards promote the literacy skills and concepts required for college and career readiness in multiple disciplines.

The CA Next Generation Science Standards allows students to grow as scientists and citizens. This will be accomplished through a progressive and coherent science curriculum that allows all students to experience science in the classroom. Vista Grande students also get additional science enrichment by coming to the Science Lab, TK-5.

Social Studies

Students will progress from simple geography and important historical figures, to learning about the native people and history of California, to discovering the conditions that led to the birth of our nation. We want our students to also understand and respect the variety of people that have contributed to the building of our nation.

Music Piano Chello icon

Students at Vista Grande have the opportunity to participate in a couple different music programs. In the lower grade, students have a bi-weekly music class sponsored by our Vista Grande Foundation. When students are in fourth and fifth grades, they are exposure to instruments, reading music, and performance.

The Vista Grande Foundation sponsors our FineArtists™ program. Fine Artists™, trains adult volunteer art docents to teach Kathleen Kane-Murrell's original curriculum. Each lesson is based on a famous artist and includes art history and literacy component. The program is for all students from TK-5th, and exposes students to a variety of media.
